The Sumner Spartans remain undefeated beating the Orting Cardinals 24-23 in a close game on Friday.

Spartans fought their way to a one point victory over Orting Friday at home.

Sumner was quick to score and took a 17-0 lead in the second with 8:40 to play in the half.

The Cardinals scored twice in the second quarter and trailed the Spartans by three entering halftime.

Orting controlled the ball for most of the third quarter, scoring with 1:08 remaining. The touchdown moved the Cardinals ahead of Sumner 21-17.

“Orting is a good team,” said Sumner coach Keith Ross. “They have some great players on offense and are a difficult team to defend.”

In the fourth quarter, Sumner came back and took the lead.

Orting traveled down field, but the Spartan defense stopped them on the goal line. Cardinals gave the ball over on downs with less than two minutes in the game.

After an illegal procedure penalty, the ball was placed on the 1-yard line. Sumner called two timeouts and with 28.4 seconds left in the game. The Spartans had a fourth and six.

Sumner took a safety, giving Orting two points and bringing their lead to one with 23.5 seconds remaining.

The Cardinals tried to score but after a sack, the clock was running out and the Spartans managed to squeak by with the win.

“We feel really honored to be 6-0 and (we) need to keep working hard,” Ross said.

Their next game is  7 p.m. Friday against Washington at Sunset Chev Stadium.
