SHS SWIM AND DIVE: Spartans earn first league crown

“Fife has been our biggest competitor,” coach Dana Powers said. “Our girls came to swim today and wanted to become the first team in Sumner’s history to go undefeated.

“I’m proud of these girls and their times haven’t even begun to improve. They are looking sharp on the technique and when they taper and put on their fast suits, watch out.”

The league meet takes place Friday at Foss High in Tacoma with the district meet right behind Nov. 5 and 6 at Renton’s Hazen High. The Spartans have already qualified a handful of individuals and relays for the state meet Nov. 11 and 12, but are hoping to use these final two meets to add to those numbers.

Against Fife, those Spartans looking to qualify dropped time, like Katie Eske who finished fourth at 2 minutes, 48.92 seconds in the 200-yard individual medley behind teammates Madison Munger and Alicia Ditty who went 1-2. She also dropped time in the 100 breaststroke. Elizabeth Martin dropped time in her 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Emma Thompson dropped time in the 100 butterfly to a 1:05.60, a better state qualifying time. Kallan Gustafson and Ashley Huynh placed 1-2 in the 200 freestyle both dropping time to a 2.10.25 and 2.10.84 respectfully.

Ditty, Huynh, Munger and Sami Hendricks won the 200 medley relay. Hendricks and Elizabeth Martin went 1-2 in the 50 freestyle. Munger and Thompson went 1-2 in the 100 butterfly. Hendricks won the 100 freestyle. Gustafson and Kressler finished first and third in the 500 freestyle. Munger Thompson, Huynh and Hendricks won the 200 freestyle relay and Martin, Roberts, Kressler and Gustafson were second. Ditty and Thompson finished first and second in the 100 backstroke and Huynh and Martin were first and third in the 100 breaststroke. Ditty, Gustafson, Martin and Thompson ended the meet placing second in the 400 freestyle relay.

The Spartans kept their win streak alive against Steilacoom with five of the Spartans’ nine winning times state-qualifying times.

The 200-yard medley relay of Ditty, Huynh, Munger and Hendricks won in a state-qualifying 2:01.25.

Munger won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly with state-qualifying times, 2:04.83 and 1:05.44, respectively.

Ditty took first in the 200 IM in 2:37.35.

Hendricks won the 50 freestyle with as state time of 25.69 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:19.16.

Huynh led the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:00.05.

The 200 free relay team of Munger, Huynh, Thompson, Hendricks finished with a state time of 1:47.90.

Thompson won the 100 backstroke in 1:11.69.
