SHS GOLF: Title will come down to playoff

The Sumner Spartans were hoping to lift themselves out of their funk Monday with a victory over winless Clover Park. The win would give the Sumner High boys golf team a much-needed advantage heading into Thursday’s South Puget Sound League 2A tournament at Bremerton’s Gold Mountain Golf Club.

The road got bumpy when the Spartans suffered a 54-52 loss to White River Thursday on the Hornets’ home course at Tapps Island. The loss left the league-leaders tied for that spot with Franklin Pierce and Fife. While the Spartans were battling the Warriors Monday, those two teams were going head to head.

In this season’s league tournament, golfers will score points, which will determine the league crown. Each golfers’ stroke total will determine who advances to Tuesday’s state-qualifying tournament.

Against White River, Sumner’s Kai Taylor earned medalist honors with 41 strokes for 12 points.

On the girls side, Rebecca Turcotte led the Lady Spartans to a 41-32 win over White River Thursday. She shot a 12-over par 49 at Linden Golf and Country Club. The girls will follow the same schedule for league and state-qualifying as the boys’ teams.
