East Pierce Fire and Rescue crews responded to a head-on collision at 6:40 p.m., Friday, on Sumner-Tapps Highway and 162nd Avenue East.
A speeding vehicle attempted to pass another when the incident occurred, according to witnesses. Both vehicles were crushed and two of the four people involved had to be removed by responders, according to East Pierce Battalion Chief Rick Goetz.
All four patients were transported to a local trauma center for treatment; one reportedly sustained life-threatening injuries.
Three East Pierce medic units, two fire engines, one ladder truck and Sumner Police Department were on scene. Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies continue to investigate.
