The spring season provided a bountiful harvest of honors and accolades for high school teams and individual athletes in the area.
In both the Class 3A and Class 2A ranks, accomplishments were many and varied at Enumclaw, Bonney Lake, White River and Sumner.
Here’s a look at some of the highlights.
BONNEY LAKE/SUMNER TRACK AND FIELD
At the Class 3A championships at Tacoma’s Mount Tahoma High School, individual titles were earned by Bonney Lake’s Dreakeanna Adair in the discus and Samantha Boudreau in the shot put. Sumner High’s Josh Riley won the 300-meter hurdles.
As a team, the Bonney Lake boys were second, the best team showing by any of the local squads.
SUMNER TENNIS
Aside from winning the SPSL 3A championship with a 13-1 record, the Spartans cheered on freshman Jade Lancaster as she won four straight matches at the 3A state tournament and captured the singles title.
Competing in the Tri-Cities, Lancaster dropped just one set on the way to the winner’s circle.
As a team, the Spartans made quite a turnaround, having gone 6-8 the season before.
SUMNER BASEBALL
The Spartans put together a good regular season, finishing second in the SPSL 3A with a mark of 11-3, but really shined late in the year.
After winning a district tourney opener, the Spartans dropped a contest and fell into the loser’s bracket. Once there, Sumner won three straight loser-out games to punch their ticket – as the district’s No. 5 seed – to the Class 3A state tournament.
Once in the Sweet 16, Sumner won two games to advance to the Final Four. Playing in Pasco, things didn’t go as well, but the season culminated with a fourth-place showing at state.
