The following is written by Sumner Mayor Dave Enslow:
Looking back, this has been a busy year in Sumner. Some people ask if running a City makes me tired. Actually, being part of growth and change makes me excited to see what’s ahead. Here’s a recap of the topics we covere dfrom the past year of e-newsletters.
- 2015 Legislative Agenda resulted in $850,000 funding, thanks in large part to Senator Roach and Rep. Stokesbary, for the White River Restoration project design, enhancing habitat and reducing flood risks.
- GKN Aerospace selected a location in Sumner to build winglets for Boeing.
- Association of the United States Army honored Leroy Goff with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
- Design unveiled for new Bridge Street bridge.
- Popular Beyond the Borders transit for seniors, youth, low-income and disabled added door-to-door service.
- Updating Sumner’s Comprehensive Plan and East Sumner Neighborhood Plan.
- Sumner’s Parks and Forestry Commission helped Sustainable Forestry Initiative breakthe world record by planting trees along the Sumner Link Trail.
- We welcomed the U.S. Open with Open in Sumner festivities, and enjoyed seeing Dillanos Coffee Roasters and Windmill Gardens at the U.S. Open.
- The largest YMCA in Washington State opened in Sumner.
- New businesses to town including Craft.19, Trackside Pizza (who both did major renovations of historic downtown buildings) plus Indulge, Finder’s Market, Nutrua Medispa, Strategem, Out of the Attic, Sumner Photography Studios, and Sugar Shack Day Spa. There were probably more, and our apologies if I missed some!
- Continued major expansion of 136th/Valentine Road for new corridor on north end.
- Walked a Mile for domestic violence awareness, golfed and walked to support those with cancer, marched in parades, decorated floats, graduated Sumner University students.
- Weathered three major storms.
- Received donation of a large animal trailer for Metro Animal Services.
- Helped match toy donations with hundreds of local wishes for Toy Box.
There’s much more, but I could list things into the new year. You get the idea that a lot happened in Sumner in 2015, and there’s more to come in 2016. Please enjoy a happy and safe new year.
