Sumner High’s swimmers raced to more state-qualifying times as the season drew to a close Oct. 13 with a 112-66 win over Lakes and Thursday with a 128-52 victory over Bonney Lake.

Sumner High’s swimmers raced to more state-qualifying times as the season drew to a close Oct. 13 with a 112-66 win over Lakes and Thursday with a 128-52 victory over Bonney Lake.

The Spartans now head into postseason with the subdistrict meet Friday and Saturday at Enumclaw High. For complete details see the story on page C1.

Against Lakes, sophomore Sami Hendricks raced to a state-qualifying time in the 100-yard freestyle. Her time of 56.04 seconds was well under the time of 56.30 to give her a lane at the state meet in November.

Hendricks also won the 200 freestyle in 2.08.81 and was first off the blocks for SHS’s 200 freestyle relay. She also swam the 50 freestyle leg in the 200 medley relay.

Spartans also posted several personal best times and a couple of district-qualifying times at the meet.

Emma Thompson joined Hendricks in both relays, the 200 freestyle and the butterfly leg on the 200 medley relay. Thompson dropped a second in the 100 butterfly, from a 1.07.79 to a 1.06.61. Lizzie Kressler scored a district-qualifying time in the 100 butterfly posting a 1.11.59. Ashley Huynh bettered her time in the 50 freestyle from a 29.78 to a 28.54 and put up a respectable 1.16.89 in the 100 breastroke.

Other swimmers who bettered their times were: Kendra Creech, 50 freestyle, dropped 2 seconds to post a 34.00, and dropped 10 seconds in the 100 freestyle for a time of 1.19.54; Jessie Shook dropped time in her 50 freestyle, swimming a 36.49 and her 100 freestyle swimming a 1.28.13; McKenna Roberts dropped time in her 100 freestyle from a 1.44.36 to at 1.26.09; Sarah Grant bettered her 50 freestyle from a 41.47 to a 40.75; Jaime Morey bettered her time in the 100 backstroke from a 1.29.19 to a 1.28.21, as well as the 500 freestyle going from a 7.11.34 to a 6.52.29; Madison Dreiger was solid swimming a better time in the 100 butterfly, dropping from 1.29.19 to a 1.28.21. She also raced the last leg in the 400 freestyle relay and a strong 500 freestyle where she bested her time from a 7.58.03 to a 7.52.00.

Thursday with Bonney Lake, Taylor Ditty raced to her own state-qualifying time in the 100 freestyle, swimming a 55.92. She also posted a state-qualifying time with her lead-off 50 yards in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 25.72.

Hendricks also posted a state time in the 50 freestyle in a 25.61.

Ditty, Huynh, Thompson and Hendricks also secured the Spartans a spot at state in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1.57.80.

Also in the 200 medley relay, Morey, Katie Ekse, Kressler and Kallan Gustfason just missed a district time with a 2.19.04.

Morey dropped more than 12 seconds in the 200 freestyle to record a 2.39.04 and senior Stephanie Hamre, in her final home meet, swam the 200 freestyle three seconds faster in a time of 2.33.23. Morey dropped 8 seconds to place second in the 100 freestyle with a 1.07.18.

Gustafson won the 500 freestyle in a time of 6.07.37. Hamre was second in a 7.00.30.

Ali Bryant dropped more than 45 seconds in the 200 individual medley in a time of 3.26.11.

Huynh placed second in the 50 freestyle in 28.33 and Kressler was third at 29.00.

Divers Roberts and Kaylee Cline placed two-three with 95.45 and 91.35 respectively.

Thompson, Kressler and xx Dreiger placed 1-2-3 in the 100 butterfly with times of 1.05.62, 1.12.16 and 1.36.68 respectfully.

The 200 free relay with Ditty, Thompson, Huynh and Hendricks just missed a state-qualifying time with a winning time of 1.47.35.

Ditty won the 100 backstroke in a time of 1.06.97, while Thompson placed second with a best time and district-qualifying time of 1.10.84. Huynh was third with a 1.13.06.

In an exciting 100 breastroke race, Bonney Lake’s Julie Herbst outtouched Katie Ekse. Ekse’s time of 1:25.80 was a personal best.

The 400 free relay of Kressler, Morey, Ekse and Gustafson won in a 4.35.51.
