At its June meeting the Pierce County Library System’s Board of Trustees will discuss results from public opinion research about the Library’s priorities, the Library’s mid-year budget, and other issues. The Board of Trustees will meet at the Library’s Processing and Administrative Center, 3005 112th St. E., in Tacoma, on Wednesday, June 13, from 3:30 to 6 p.m.
Public opinion survey results: The Board will further discuss results from a public opinion survey and focus groups that gathered ideas and opinions from nearly 1,000 adults and teenagers about services people need and value. Overall the focus group participants called for the Library to focus on reading; learning, in particular early learning; helping students succeed in school; and helping people/providing customer service. Respondents to the public opinion poll noted the same services as important, as well as offering an online library as a top priority. The Library plans to use results from the research to help define its product and inform decisions regarding services to continue, add, reduce or discontinue.
Mid-Year Budget: This month managers are reviewing and proposing changes to the Library’s 2012 budget that may be needed to best meet customers’ needs. This is the time of year that managers review budgets to ensure they are on target to deliver the planned services within the projected costs. In July the Board of Trustees will review and make decisions on any proposed changes to the Library’s 2012 budget. The Library’s priorities for the 2012 budget include:
• Maintaining the promises from the voter-approved 2006 levy, this included access to library services with an increase in the hours libraries are open, more books and materials, additional services for children and teenagers, and improved customer service and technology.
• Being good stewards of taxpayers’ money.
• Providing up-to-date services people want and value.
• Building a customer base for future service.
