Sumner School District is reminding eligible seventh- and eighth-grade students to apply for Washington state College Bound scholarships by June 30. The mission of the program is to give students from low-income families — and students who are foster children — incentive to achieve academically and live as good citizens.
Eligible students sign a pledge promising to graduate from high school, maintain a 2.0 grade point average and be good citizens. In exchange, the state of Washington pays for their college tuition and books for four-year state public colleges and universities, as well as participating private institutions, community and technical colleges and private career colleges.
The four-year scholarship covers tuition, fees, and provides a $500 stipend for books.
Eligible students meet one of four criteria:
- Are eligible to receive free and reduced-price lunch
- Receives Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefits
- Are foster youth
- Meet the income standards
The deadline to apply is June 30 of students’ eighth-grade year; seventh-grade students are encouraged by the district to apply early. Applications can be filled out online through the Washington Student Achievement Council website and paper applications are available at all middle school offices in the Sumner School District.
