The Sumner High cross country squad remained undefeated in South Puget Sound League 2A, beating Clover Park and Franklin Pierce on the Spartans’ 5K Cascadia course Thursday.
Sumner won by default over Clover Park in both boys and girls races, as the Warriors were unable to field an entire team. The Spartan boys prevailed over Franklin Pierce 22-34, while the SHS girls edged out the Cardinal runners 25-30.
Franklin Pierce boys finished first and second, but SHS proved to be more balanced as senior Cory Brandt completed the course with a clocking of 17 minutes, 22 seconds, good enough for a third-place showing. He was followed by cohorts Arturo Perez and Reid Selmer who claimed fourth and sixth places with times of 17:58 and 18:11, respectively.
The grouping was even tighter for the Spartan girls. Gabby Phelps finished first at 20:05, but right on her heels were Abi Hensler in third at 20:38; Natasha Wilson, fifth, 21:59; Robi Long, eighth, 22:56; and Amanda Riley, 10th, 23:14.
Sumner will host Steilacoom Thursday on the Cascadia Course.
