On a cloudless day at Fort Steilcoom Park, Sumner High’s cross country crew had an equally dreamy meet versus Steilacoom, as the boys gleaned a dominant 15-45 score and the girls turned in a polished performance as well, claiming a 19-51 triumph.
For the girls, Gabby Phelps eclipsed all of her previous times with a personal record of 21 minutes, 5 seconds.
The remaining four scoring girls were right on Phelps’ heels. Tyeanne Lubking crossed the finish in third with a time of 21:40, closely followed by Natasha Wilson, 21:42, Abby Hensler, 22:19, and Leah Engelhardt, 22:33.
For the Spartan boys it was all Corey Brandt. The veteran was the pacesetter for the event and was the one the fans saw first as the runners broke for the checkered flag, managing a 17:42 time for a personal best.
The rest of the pack followed Brandt’s leadership en masse as they finished second, third, fourth and fifth.
Sophomore Jose Hernandez was the second purple jersey to complete the race at 17:47 and Coltin Tanner the third at 17:52. The fourth and fifth spots turned into a dead sprint as Reid Selmer and Jobe Layton dashed past Steilacoom’s top runner with times of 18:07.36 and 18:07.69, respectively.
