The Sumner City Council voted unanimously to join with the city of Algona to merge the two cities’ Learning for Life Police Explorer posts.
It’s been two years since Sumner’s program was active because of the amount of time and number of staff needed. With the joining of the two posts it is possible for Sumner’s post to reopen.
The name of the joint posts is the South Valley Explorers.
Participants in the program are ages 14 through 21 and learn basic police skills like crowd control, but they also learn leadership skills, according to Jason Wilson, police administrative manager for Sumner.
Explorers volunteer time to community events like the Daffodil Parade and National Night Out.
Sumner and Algona will pay for the staff time necessary to attend meetings and events, but the goal is to operate with no ongoing funding from Sumner.
In other business, the council unanimously adopted a resolution clarifying the service boundaries between the Mountain View-Edgewood Water Company and the city of Sumner.
The resolution changes boundaries so land parcels once split by the division are now whole and water is provided more efficiently.
