Police week | Sumner Mayor Update

Every time I see a police officer in Sumner, I'm reminded of what an amazing job they do for each of us in keeping our community safe. Last year, they responded to 14,800 calls for service, arrested 664 suspects, made 2700 traffic stops and removed 53 impaired drivers from our roadways.

Every time I see a police officer in Sumner, I’m reminded of what an amazing job they do for each of us in keeping our community safe. Last year, they responded to 14,800 calls for service, arrested 664 suspects, made 2700 traffic stops and removed 53 impaired drivers from our roadways. They recovered millions of dollars of stolen goods, and participate in regional groups to fight car prowls, child abductions and SWAT responses.  In addition to the tough stuff, they also encourage our kids to wear helmets and avoid drugs, they make parades and events in the streets possible, and they work with citizens of all ages to help them be safe.  I think our officers serve us all very well.

This  week is Police Week and Peace Officer Memorial Day.  It’s a great reminder to us about how challenging a job they have as well as an opportunity to let our officers know how much you appreciate their work.  In many ways they have a thankless job and are oftentimes put in positions none of us would want to be in, putting their own lives and well-being at risk to serve you and me.  I think they have a hard job that’s becoming increasingly more difficult, and I am so appreciative that despite that, they come to work each day to make our community what it is.

If you have a chance this week, thank an officer for their service or write them a note of appreciation.  But it really is something we should do more than one week a year.  If you want to send any messages, I’ll be happy to pass them along. Sumner is truly blessed with great police officers and I know they will appreciate hearing from you.
