We all worship something. Maybe you choose to believe there is no god, or maybe you choose the god of Islam, or the god of Judaism, maybe a path to enlightenment, or even the Trinitarian god of the Bible through Jesus.

When asked by others of your faith, it’s a quick two-second answer, taking little effort or thought.

But what if you couldn’t tell people? What if they had to guess? Could they tell our faith through our behaviors and choices? Some would say that they put their self-worth in God, and yet as a friend you often see them anxious and worried about what others think of them.

Others might speak about a faith that endures hardships and difficulties and yet they’ve always gone back for their refill on the pain-meds, sometimes taking them in fours and fives.

Some might mention the good virtues of their faith, like being responsible and having self-control. Yet they think nothing of overspending on a house, or the much deserved “everyone else is going to Hawaii” vacation.

Eventually the “I deserve it” overcomes their budget, forcing them to consolidate loans, move into bankruptcy and eventually paying pennies on the dollar. If you’re money’s good, maybe it’s your pride.

With the increased demands for cosmetic surgery it seems more popular to have people envy us rather than respect us. We’d never admit it, nor profess such worship. Here’s my favorite God we worship, the God who gives us what we want. People commit their lives to God and make him a deal saying, “I’ll worship you God, as long as you…” Our list is always easy to rationalize, “give me good health, good kids, a good marriage, a good job, nice car, big house, and a good grade on this test.” When God does what we want then we give our allegiance to him. When God fails, our faith fades.

So, who or what do you worship? CS Lewis said this, “If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”

The god of the Bible, through the life of Jesus, explains to us that we were in fact made for another world, that there’s a battle for your allegiance, and there’s guidelines for how to worship the god who created us.
