The Spartans are a force to be reckoned with this year.

Sumner beat the Renton High School Indians 45-21 on Friday.

With the win the Spartans advanced to the Class 2A State Football Playoffs. Sumner will face off against the W.F. West Bearcats out of Chehalis at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15 at Sunset Chev Stadium.

“We are excited about the chance to play a very good W.F. West team,” coach Keith Ross said.

The first touchdown of the game was a 15-yard run by running back Brandon Tuileapa.

With 9:47 to go in the first half, running back DeJon Lynch scored his first touchdown of the night. The Spartans increased their lead to 14-0.

Lynch added another six on the board for Sumner and with the point after the Spartans increased its lead over Renton to 21-0.

Renton answered with a 57-yard touchdown run by quarterback Dassaun Sauls. The Indians scored a two-point conversion and Sumner led 21-8 with 3:22 to go in the second quarter.

Lynch scored his third touchdown of the night and Sumner’s lead increased to 20.

With seconds remaining the first half, Tuileapa scored on a 44-yard screen pass. Going into halftime, the Spartans led the Indians 35-8.

“We played a great first half,” Ross said. “Our game plan was to run the ball be really physical.”

Lynch had three rushing touchdowns and 73 yards in the first half.

The Spartans were able to establish the run and defense limited Renton to only eight points in the first half, he said.

Renton with the ball, went on fourth and 22 and linebacker Austin Striplin intercepted. The Spartans couldn’t capitalize, they fumbled and Renton recovered. And with 4:47 to go in the third quarter, Sauls scored on a six-yard touchdown.

Sumner running back Josh Riley scored on a three-yard touchdown run, taking the Spartans’ lead to 42-15.

Sauls scored all three of Renton’s touchdowns. He would score one more time on a 13-yard touchdown run with 10:28 to go in the game.

Renton attempted an onside kick but Gage Whitehead for Sumner came up with the ball. The final score of the game came off a 31-yard field goal by Michael Smith.

Austin Ford had an another interception late in the game for Sumner. The Spartans would fumble again and Renton recovered. The Indians took the ball down to Sumner’s three yard line but defense held them on fourth down. Renton turned the ball over on downs.

Sumner would fumble again and Renton took over with 2:12 to go in the game. Spartan defense held Renton again and the Indians were unable to score.
