CRACK: An officer on patrol July 15 witnessed a car fail to stop at a red light at the intersection of 192nd Avenue East and state Route 410 and began to follow the vehicle. The officer activated his lights and the car eventually pulled over in the Dairy Queen parking lot. Upon contact, the driver was “extremely nervous” and produced a paper Washington state identification card. The officer also noticed in the ashtray a glass pipe, commonly used to smoke narcotics. The suspect, who was driving with a suspended license, was placed under arrest. A search revealed a large rock in his pocket that the suspect admitted was crack cocaine. A K-9 officer was called to further search the vehicle and two more pipes and an additional crack rock were found. The driver was transported to the Pierce County jail where he was booked for unlawful possession of a controlled substance and given traffic infractions for failure to stop at a red light, having no proof of insurance and having an obstructed rear license plate. Pierce County prosecutors also charged him with unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and driving with a suspended license.

ARSON?: Police on July 16 were called to the 20400 block of Church Lake Drive East for a report of a structure fire at an unoccupied home. As police arrived they could hear small explosions and the sound of glass shattering. Fire officials believe the fire could have been arson and police and fire authorities are investigating.

FRAUD: A subject arrived at the police department lobby July 19 to report fraud on his checking account. The victim attempted to take out money, but was unable to do so and was informed that several thousands of dollars of check deposits and withdrawals were made on the account within the week. The victim recently opened a new account and was awaiting a debit card from the bank. The victim believes the card could have been stolen during a mail theft within the past week. All money has been reimbursed and police are investigating.

GRAFFITI: Police on July 19 were called to Mountain View Middle School for a report of malicious mischief. A custodian observed three instances of graffiti including a “swastika-like symbol,” and another, unknown symbol on one wall and the words “(expletive) this school” on another. Police are investigating.

MALICIOUS MISCHIEF: An officer on patrol July 19 was flagged down at Allan Yorke Park by a city worker who discovered graffiti and damage to various structures and sections of the park. The report states that the writing seemed typical of those used by gang members, though the officer was not sure if the symbols and tags used are gang-related. Police are investigating. An estimate to clean the damage was not available.

AN I-TRIP TO I-TROUBLE: Police July 19 were dispatched to Walmart for a report of a shoplifter who was caught attempting to leave the store without paying for an I-Trip adapter, valued at $55, taken from the electronics section of the store. The subject was waiting for work to be completed on his vehicle and also had $120 on him. When asked why he did not pay for the adapter, he said nothing. He was cited for theft and released and was trespassed from the store for one year.
