The Sumner boys tennis season got off to a great start with a handful of come-from-behind wins in a 5-0 victory at Fife.
Sumner players dropped the first set in first singles, first doubles and second doubles before battling their way back in what Coach Chris Heacox called a “really good win for our first match.”
Zak Landers, at No. 1, dropped the first set 5-7 and then fell behind 4-1 in the second set before rallying to win five straight games and take the set. He picked up the victory for the Spartans in a third set tiebreaker that was played to 10 because the outcome of the overall match had already been decided by the time the No. 1 guys reached their third set.
Second singles player Brandon Walsh had it easier in his match, winning 6-4, 6-3.
The No 1 doubles team of Will Mortell and Alex Landes dropped their first set 6-4 before coming back to win the next two 6-4, 6-0. The No. 2 doubles team of Scott Brown and Nathan Santo Domingo also rallied after losing the first set to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-0.
“Real nice job by those guys coming back and winning the last two sets,” Heacox said of the rallies.
The third doubles team of Josh Seerden and John Fordice had an easier time, winning 6-0, 6-3.
