BLHS VOLLEYBALL: Bonney Lake upsets No. 4 Lions

After suffering three consecutive volleyball losses, the Bonney Lake Panthers recovered in grand fashion with a 3-1 South Puget Sound League 3A upset win over previously unbeaten Auburn Mountainview Oct. 21.

The Lions (13-1, 7-1 league) came into the game ranked No. 4 in the Washington State Coaches Association Class 3A poll.

Auburn Mountainview won the first match 25-22, before the Panthers (10-4, 5-2 league) reeled off three consecutive wins, 25-20, 25-23, 25-16.

Allison Hills and Danielle Norton combined for 27 kills for the Panthers. Hills had a game-high 15 and Norton recorded 12, while Chelsea Merkel dished out a game-high 43 assists.

Defensively for the Panthers, Karly Edwards came up with 28 digs and Hills had 15.

Erica LeFeverf served five aces in the win.

Bonney Lake closed out the regular season Monday night at Sumner. Results will be available at www.courierherald.com.

In nonleague action Oct. 19, the Panthers fell to Class 2A Fife 3-1 on the road.

After losing the first game 26-25, Bonney Lake came back to win the second 25-21. They lost the final two 25-21 and 25-18.

Hills led the Panthers with 11 kills, 19 digs and three blocks, while Taylor Watkins had 10 kills and 24 digs.

Merkel handed out 38 assists.
