A 37-year-old Bonney Lake man escaped serious injury after slamming his vehicle into the rear of a semi-truck in the northbound I-5 Federal Way weigh station Thursday, the Washington State Patrol reported.
The WSP said at approximately 9:04 p.m. a black Mercedes sedan entered the weigh station at an extremely high rate of speed and slammed into the rear end of a semi-truck as the driver was conducting a self-initiated routine weight check on the east scales.
Witnesses told investigating troopers that the Mercedes was traveling at an estimated 70 mph on the exit ramp to the scale house and barely slowed down before slamming into the rear of the semi-truck.
The Mercedes’ driver, Jason Fritzler, was transported to Auburn General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Alcohol is believed to be a factor and Fritzler is being investigated for driving under the influence.
The driver of the semi-truck was not injured and the scale house was not damaged.
The northbound Federal Way weigh station was closed for two hours while troopers investigated the collision.
