After watching his his predominantly senior Sumner High girls basketball team defeat district rival Bonney Lake 51-39 in the Panther den Friday night, coach Robert Thayer had to ask, “We managed to weather the second half storm that swept through the gym, didn’t we?”

Bonney Lake’s Naomi Pounds poured in 20 second-half points but Sumner used its considerable height advantage to outrebound the Panther girls 50-25 and thus control the outcome, sending Bonney Lake’s overall mark spiraling downward to 0-4.

The undefeated Sumner bunch‚ 2-0 after toppling a tandem of South Puget Sound League 3A squads last week in Enumclaw and BLHS, debuted its South Puget Sound League 2A campaign Tuesday, traveling to Eatonville; results will be posted at www.blscourierherald.com.

Sumner’s home game Dec. 7 against Enumclaw featured the combined scoring of Kaitlin King and Angie Sanchez, who notched 32 points during the Spartans’ 52-37 victory.
