Sumner High did the expected last Friday, crushing the winless Rogers Rams.

The South Puget Sound League 4A football game was decided early, as the Spartans scored 10 first-quarter points and added four touchdowns during the second period. With a 38-0 lead at intermission, Sumner eased off in the second half and finished with a 45-7 victory.

The win pushed the Spartans’ record to 7-0 in SPSL 4A play and 8-0 overall.

Sumner, which entered Friday’s game at Sunset Chev Stadium ranked No. 3 in the statewide 4A poll, was sparked by quarterback Luke Ross. He tossed five TD passes to five receivers; on the receiving end of scoring strikes were John Hopkins, Tre Weed, Connor Wedington, Tyson Rainwater and Skyler Sandretzki. The Spartans’ final TD came on a 25-yard run by Weed.

Nick Phillips added a 42-yard field goal and was perfect on six extra-point tries.

The Spartans will attempt to polish off a perfect regular season Friday night when they take on Emerald Ridge High at Sparks Stadium in downtown Puyallup. The Jaguars enter the game with a 3-4 record in SPSL 4A play, 3-5 overall.

Bonney Lake slips in showdown

Friday night’s battle for Pierce County League 3A supremacy went to the Lincoln Abes, who bested Bonney Lake High 14-3.

The teams had entered the contest – staged at historic Lincoln Bowl in Tacoma – with identical 5-0 records. Now, with their 5-1 league mark, the Panthers are 6-2 overall.

Bonney Lake’s only points of the night came in the third quarter when Tate Hamlett connected on a 29-yard field goal, putting his team on top 3-0.

Lincoln’s go-ahead touchdown came in dramatic fashion, as Teshawn Seu intercepted a Bonney Lake pass and dashed 90 yards for a touchdown. The Abes salted the game away on their next possession, getting a 60-yard TD run from Joey Sinclair.

Bonney Lake will look to finish the regular season on a winning note this Friday, Oct. 28, with a home contest against the Spanaway Lake Sentinels (1-5 PCL, 1-7 overall).
