One person died and another was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries following a collision this morning.

East Pierce Fire and Rescue responded at 6:47 a.m. to reports of a crash on Pioneer Way East (also known as State Route 162) between the town of South Prairie and Mundy Loss Road.

According to East Pierce Battalion Chief Jeff Moore, the firefighters arrived to find one vehicle on its side. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Buckley Fire Department also responded.

Washington State Patrol is investigating the crash, saying over Twitter that the crash is “very complex,” and that detectives, techs and drug recognition experts (DREs) are on the scene.

Traffic is being re-routed during the investigation.
