Emerald Downs’ leading jockey Juan Gutierrez to throw out first pitch at Safeco in Seattle Mariner game

Emerald Downs’ leading jockey Juan Gutierrez will trade in his riding crop for a baseball glove on Tuesday to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Safeco Field.

Emerald Downs’ leading jockey Juan Gutierrez will trade in his riding crop for a baseball glove on Tuesday to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Safeco Field.

The ritual will take place right before the Seattle Mariners take on the Baltimore Orioles at 7:10 p.m.

Wagers have already taken place on whether the Mexico City native can throw a strike to home plate. Unfazed, Gutierrez said he’s confident he can get the ball from the mound to the catcher.

“I used to play baseball when I was a kid in Mexico,” Gutierrez said. “It seems pretty far, but I should be able to (throw a strike).”

Speaking of strikes, Gutierrez orchestrated a remarkable strike rate during the opening weekend, winning 7-of-21 races and becoming only the second jockey to win 1,000 races at Emerald Downs.
