Franklin Pierce’s pitching sent 13 White River High batters packing as the Cardinals won 5-2 March 30.

“It’s tough to play a Monday game without swinging the bats the day before, especially when the guy the other team runs out on the mound is throwing 80-plus mph and it’s 34 degrees,” Hornet coach Mike Williams said.

The loss dropped the Hornets to 1-2 in South Puget Sound League 3A play, 3-2 overall. The Hornets were scheduled to host Bonney Lake Tuesday before traveling to Sumner for a 4 p.m. game today, Wednesday. They return home Friday to host Enumclaw in another afternoon contest. The Hornets’ March 31 game with Timberline was rained out.

Despite the loss to the Cardinals, there were some highlights.

Trevor Lubking did a good job in sudden relief in the second inning, Williams said, and Danny Smith continues to keep runners from scoring.

“He has thrown out a guy every game,” Williams said.
