The Enumclaw Fire Department was dispatched to a large structure fire Saturday.
The caller reporting the fire, which was at a mixed-use barn/shop building that included an occupied apartment, came in at 10:40 a.m. by a worker at the farm.
According to Fire Chief Randy Fehr, the fire developed quickly, and the family was evacuated with little time to spare.
“The father said the flames followed him out of the structure,” Fehr said. “The barn contained hay which was hard for us to extinguish.”
After a seven-hour effort by Enumclaw firefighters, with assistance from Buckley, Mountain View, King County Fire District 20, East Pierce Fire and Rescue and Valley Regional Fire Authority, the building was deemed to be a complete loss.
One firefighter was hospitalized and treated for dehydration.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
