The Washington State Legislature approved new legislation bringing the state into compliance with the federal REAL ID Act, which requires a person to show proof of citizenship before obtaining a driver’s license.

The bill creates a two-tiered ID system, with our existing enhanced driver’s license meeting the federal requirements. The standard license will remain available to all residents but will not work for federal purposes like boarding a plane.
