Track and field athletes from throughout the regional, both boys and girls, will be competing this week in West Central District meets.
The reward, for top athletes, will be a berth in upcoming state meet. Competitors from Class 4A, 3A and 2A, from all corners of the state, will gather May 25-27 at Mount Tahoma High in Tacoma.
At the West Central/Southwest District level, Sumner and Enumclaw will head to French Field May 18 and 20 for the Class 4A meet. The field is on the campus of Kent-Meridian High School.
At last week’s South Puget Sound League 4A meet, the Sumner High boys placed second, trailing only Bellarmine Prep, and the Spartan girls were third behind Curtis High and Emerald Ridge.
Winning events for the SHS boys were Michael Russell in the 400 meters; Cristiaan Priebe in the high jump. Winners for the Spartan girls were Emma Sjolund in both the 800 and 1600 meters and Rhaven Dean in the shot put and javelin.
For Enumclaw, at the North Puget Sound League 4A meet, the girls 4×400 relay team was victorious. Making up the squad were Taylor Tandecki, Carli Bogar, Gracie Neu and Taliah Olson. Among the EHS boys, Connery McLaughlin won the discus and javelin.
The Enumclaw girls placed sixth at the league meet and the boys tied for eighth.
In the 4A league meets, for both the boys and girls, the top six in each event qualified for this week’s district meet.
Bonney Lake will head to the Class 3A district meet May 19-20 at Sunset Chev Stadium at Sumner High.
The Panther boys placed third and the girls were fourth at last week’s Pierce County League meet.
Winning events for the Bonney Lake boys were William Glick, 800 meters; Cody Miller, 110-meter hurdles; and the 4×400 relay team of Click, Mykel Fisher, Allen Fletcher and Miller.
Event winners among Bonney Lake girls were Dreakeanna Adair, who won both the shot put and the discus, and Katie Fryberger in the pole vault.
From the league meet, the top six in each event qualified for this week’s district competition.
White River will be going to the Class 2A West Central District meet May 19-20 at Renton Memorial Stadium.
Hornet event winners from last week’s South Puget Sound League 2A meet were, for the girls, Courtney Gelmini in the 3200 meters and Kelsey Bunker in the javelin. On the boys side, winners were Spencer Hall in the high jump Greg Piontek in the pole vault.
At the league meet, the Hornet girls placed second in the field of 15 while the White River boys were 10th.
