Despite Friday night’s decisive loss at White River, Enumclaw High coach Beth Madill remains energized about the start of the season.

Her Hornets, who picked up just three victories during last year’s 20-game campaign, racked up two wins during the first week of the season.

The second-year coach watched her crew open the season with a 39-38 victory Nov. 30 over the Class 2A squad from Kingston.

Despite first-game jitters, the score remained close all the way. With the score tied at 44 and just a few seconds remaining to be played, EHS’s Katie Holland drove to the hoop and was fouled. She connected on one of two free throws with a half-second on the clock for the win.

When the Hornets traveled to North Thurston Thursday, the flow of the game was different but the outcome was the same – a one-point EHS victory.

Again, it was some clutch free-throw shooting that delivered the win. Calli Remitz went 4-for-4 down the stretch to give EHS its second victory.

Katina Ferguson scored 19 points for the Hornets.
