Former White River Hornet Kody Gould has continued to find running success, now at the collegiate level as a member of the Utah State University cross country program.

A recent highlight came Oct. 6 when Gould placed third at the Utah State-hosted Steve T. Reeder Memorial. He finished the seven-kilometer course in 21 minutes, 50.39 seconds; that made him the top collegiate finisher, as the two runners ahead of him were competing unattached.

The race is named after the former USU distance coach who died in 2016. For Gould, the race had special meaning.

“I never ran for coach Reeder, but he was the one who recruited me,” Gould said. “I wasn’t the best in high school and coach Reeder gave me a shot. I owe him everything for that.”

More recently, Gould competed Oct. 14 at Pre-Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky. He placed 28 in an 8-kilometer race, running a personal best time of 24:58 at that distance.

The Aggie runner, the son of Dennis and Tiffanee Gould, graduated in 2012 from White River and served a two-year church mission.

As a Utah State freshman in 2015, he competed in five meets and recorded a pair of Top 15 finishes. In 2016, he competed in three meets with his best showing being a 21st-place finish at the Montana State Invitational. Following his sophomore season, he was honored as a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete.

Gould headed to Utah State after a stellar career at White River High. He was an eight-time letterwinner as a member of the Hornets’ cross country and track teams, helping both to impressive finishes at state meets. He received multiple league accolades, including MVP and first-team honors, as well as being selected to the all-state cross country team.

Utah State University, a public institution in Logan, Utah, competes in the 13-team Mountain West Conference. Other members include the Air Force Academy, Boise State, Colorado College, Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawai’i, Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and Wyoming.
