Sumner High’s Rafael Rodriguez showed a flair for the dramatic, excelling in his final dive Saturday to claim the state Class 4A one-meter championship.
The Spartan senior, who will next dive at the University of Arizona, was tops among a local contingent gathering Friday and Saturday for the state meet at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Rodriguez tallied 422.35 points to take the title. Also in the final diving mix were Enumclaw’s Ben Hauswirth, who placed fourth, and Ricky Bonthuis, 12th.
Enumclaw’s Jeff Miller placed 16th in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Also earning spots in the state meet were the EHS 200-meter medley relay team of Ethan Horan, Miller, Kyle Morgan and Adam Percival, along with the EHS 500 freestyle relay team of Horan, Miller, Hauswirth and Percival.
Competing in individual events at the 4A meet were Horan in the 100 freestyle and Sumner’s Lane Bloomquist in the 500 freestyle.
In the Class 3A meet, Bonney Lake High’s Nicholas Schwendeman finished 13th in the 50-yard freestyle.
