Last night, East Pierce Fire & Rescue and the Buckley Fire Department were dispatched to a brush fire just south of Buckley on SR 165 and Borell Rd at about 6 p.m.

While in route to the brush fire, a Commercial Fire in Sumner was also dispatched. Responding mutual aid units from Buckley Fire arrived quickly at the brush fire and began containing the fire. This allowed East Pierce to reroute some responding units to the commercial fire in Sumner that was dispatched at around the same time. Cause of the brush fire was a mechanical issue with farm equipment which was damaged in the fire.

The Commercial Fire was reported to be at Golden State Foods, at Tacoma Avenue and Puyallup Street in Sumner. The first arriving unit reported 2 outbuildings on fire with multiple exposures and compressed gas cylinders venting. The fire was not at Golden State Foods but was across the street at Pasquire Panel Products. Fire from the outbuildings quickly spread through the dry grass to stored pallets, dumpsters and sawdust. Fire was spreading to a sawdust hopper and fire had also spread to the roof of the main building and was quickly contained.

Mutual Aid was provided by Central Pierce Fire & Rescue and Valley Regional Fire Authority.

Two 20×20 foot shop outbuildings were destroyed, but no injuries were reported. Cause of the fire is undetermined but appears to have started in the Mechanical Shop.

The fire in Sumner was brought under control in just under an hour. A total of 10 fire engines, three medic units, one ladder truck, and two chief officers brought the fire under control.
