Post 1949 efforts help vets, entire community

You, too, can help the VFW aid other vets and raise money for students scholarships.

Enumclaw’s band of patriots – Post 1949 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars – have a busy schedule that includes projects that benefit the entire community.

Here’s a look at some of the activities that keep members active.

• Honor Guard services at the Purple Heart Memorial in Enumclaw and Tahoma National Cemetery. Members of Post 1949 assist with funeral and memorial services for deceased veterans at Tahoma National Cemetery and other cemeteries around Enumclaw. The Honor Guard carries the colors at parades and sporting events.

• Memorial Day programs: VFW members and area Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts place flags on veterans’ graves at the Enumclaw cemetery. The post also performs a retirement ceremony for all flags that are no longer serviceable, a joint project with Enumclaw Scouts. There’s also a Memorial Day remembrance ceremony at Enumclaw’s Veterans Memorial Park (Purple Heart Monument).

• Patriot Pen and Voice of Democracy essay competition/scholarships: The post supports writing and patriotism through local participation in this nationally-sponsored essay competition. Local, district and state awards are given. National award winners could be awarded up to $36,000.

• Supporting other veterans: Post officers help veterans with the sometimes-complicated process of filing Veterans Administration disability claims. Also, post members provide transportation for veterans to VA medical appointments.

• Fundraising: Twice each year the post conducts the Buddy Poppy program, with proceeds supporting the VFW National Home for Children, Compass House and other veteran services.
