The Enumclaw High doubles team of Emily Miller and Emma McKeighen placed fifth during the West Central District tournament and landed a berth in this week’s Class 4A state tennis championships.
State play will take place Friday and Saturday, May 24-25, in the Tri-Cities. Matches will be played at both the Columbia Basin Racquet Club and Hanford High School.
The Enumclaw High duo will take on a pair from Spokane’s Lewis and Clark High in the 4A state opener. The linked portion of the 16-team bracket has the Milan Mar/Alyssa Chinn team from Inglemoor High challenging the Jacobsen sisters (Tayva and Cabri) from Sumner. In the day’s second rounds, the two winners will square off, as will the two round-one losers.
The WCD tourney was hosted by the Boeing Employees Tennis Center, where Miller and McKeighen won three of four matches and placed fifth in the field. The top seven advanced to the state 4A tourney.
The EHS duo opened district play with a victory over a Union High team, then ran into Sumner’s Jacobsen sisters. Pushed into the loser’s side of the bracket, the EHS team took fifth place by defeating teams from Auburn Mountainview, Bellarmine Prep and Olympia.
