Enumclaw, WR athletes shine at state track meet

The EHS boys placed ninth overall in the 4A competition.

Track and field athletes from throughout the state converged upon Mount Tahoma High School May 23-25 to battle for top honors.

The Tacoma school hosted the state championship meet for the 4A, 3A and 2A classifications. Here’s the rundown for competitors from Enumclaw and White River high schools.

ENUMCLAW BOYS

Carson Christensen had qualified for state in two events and showed that he belonged among the state’s best. He placed second in the long jump with an effort of 23 feet, 3 inches and was fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 44-07.

Also with a second-place showing was the EHS 4×400 relay team after finishing with a time of 3 minutes, 24.46 seconds. Making up the team were Ricky Portillo, Royal Snyder, Anthony Russell and Kale Engebretsen.

Also competing for the EHS boys were Russell, who went 21-03 to place ninth in the long jump; Snyder, 13th in the 400 meters; and Bryson Engebretsen, 16th in the 110-meter hurdles.

In all, there were 48 teams scoring at least a point at state and the Enumclaw High boys placed ninth.

ENUMCLAW GIRLS

The best showing among the Enumclaw girls was delivered by the highly-touted 4×400 relay crew. The foursome placed second with a time of 4:01.28, having clocked an even faster time while winning their preliminary heat. Making up the team were Gracie Neu, Mia Ammons, Johanna Brown and Kayla Carlson.

The same foursome competed in the 4×200 relay and didn’t fare as well. Their time of 1:45.24 wasn’t enough to advance to the finals.

Individually, Brown was 10th and Ammons placed 16th in the 400 meters and Addie Neu was 11th in the 800.

In the end, Enumclaw’s girls placed 29th in the 4A field of 44 teams.

WHITE RIVER BOYS

The big story here was Jackson Gibbon, who brought home a pair of second-place finishes. He was No. 2 in the shot put with a heave of 55-01 and took the silver in the discus with an effort of 166-05.

Spencer Brooks competed in the 400 meters and took sixth place with a time of 50.62 seconds. Thomas Cox threw the javelin 131-07 to place 15th and the White River 4×100 relay team (Brooks, Grant Swettenam, Payne Plaster and Braedan Clay) finished in 44:71 seconds to place 13th.

The White River boys placed 12th in the 2A field that had 46 schools scoring points.

WHITE RIVER GIRLS

The speedy 4×400 relay squad finished No. 2 in the state after running an impressive 4:04.15. Making up the squad were Maria Hawthorne, Emma Robbins, Taylor Schmidtke and Tori Schmidtke. The same four competed in the 4×200 relay, placed 10th in prelims and did not make the finals.

Competing for individual honors, Tori Schmidtke was seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 59.29; Paidon Froemke was 10th in the javelin with a throw of 114-08; Taylor Schmidtke ran the 300-meters and placed 11th with a time of 48.77; Jessica Taylor cleared 8-6 and wound up 14th in the pole vault; Makayla Melcher was 15th at 3200 meters with a time of 12:04.53; and Madison Jenkins had earned a state berth in the pole vault, but did not meet an opening height.

The White River girls wound up 26th in the 2A field of 49 scoring teams.
