Summer is just about halfway over, but folks are already thinking about kids going back to school.

This can be a stressful time for some families, which is why Enumclaw’s Fugate Ford is hosting the third annual Truck Show and School Supply Fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The goal for the last three years is to fill up a Ford truck with as many school supplies as possible, said organizer Jennifer Westby, whose husband helps manage the dealership. Those donations are then given to NEXUS, which organizes the supplies into backpacks, and are then shipped to the Enumclaw School District, where they’re given to the kids who need them.

Westby said there were about 275 backpacks given out last year, and hopes this year to break 300.

“No matter the economy, there’s always people that need support and kindness,” Westby said in a recent interview, adding that when she was in school, she was one of those students who needed a little help from the community to be successful. “To grow [the event] bigger and better each year is growing the support that everyone needs in the community.”

The event is more than just a fundraiser, though — if you have a truck, car, or even semi you want to show off, there are many trophies to be won and bragging rights to be earned.

There are more than 18 different categories you can enter: for trucks, there’s best in show, “biggest and baddest,” stock and clean, low and smooth, “most redneck,” best daily lowrider, “pavement princess,” best old body style, best truck 1980-1997, best truck 1998-2004, and best truck 2005-present; for cars, the categories are crowd favorite, best car pre-1980, and best car post-1980; and finally, the semi categories are best in show, biggest exhaust pipes, and farthest travelled.

There will also be a “Most Group Participation Trophy” given to the group or club with the most entries at the show.

The show is completely free to attend — just register your vehicle at www.fugatefordtruckshow.com, and show up between 8 and 9:45 a.m. to set up.

And, since the host of this event is a Ford dealership, there will be test drives available. For every test drive, Ford will donate $20 to its “Drive 4 UR Community” program, which raises money for local nonprofits. Test drivers also have a chance to win the prize of an overnight stay at the Embassy Suites in Beaverton, Oregon, and a $500 back to school shopping spree, Westby said.

There will also be a free barbecue for all who attend.

The event will be on the Ford Fugate lot at 526 Roosevelt Ave.
