Green River program addresses active lifestyle

The guest speaker at the event will be Enumclaw’s Dr. Jim Merrill.

The fall kickoff to Green River College’s popular PRIME TIME series will feature Enumclaw physician Dr. Jim Merrill.

From 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, Merrill will highlight the importance of staying active as people age. His talk will include things like reducing the risk of degenerative diseases, cancer and dementia by simply moving and staying active. Merrill will share scientific studies that show the value of getting up, moving and walking on a daily basis.

His presentation will be at the Green River College Auburn Center, 1221 D St. N.E. in Auburn. The session is free but advance registration is recommended.

Register by phone by calling 253-833-9111, ext. 2535.

Merrill was born and raised in Seattle. His education includes pre-med studies at Stanford and a medical degree from the University of Washington. He practiced family medicine in Enumclaw for 35 years, retiring in 2015 to an active lifestyle that includes eight grandchildren.

Green River’s PRIME TIME program touts itself as being aimed at “active adults that enjoy stimulating, intellectual learning through classes, discussion groups, educational tours and social activities.”

Membership is open to those 55 and older. A yearly fee of $55 entitles members to a discount on PRIME TIME offerings. Those who have not joined are welcome to attend classes at a different rate.

Also this fall, PRIME TIME classes will address subjects like retirement planning, understanding the federal budget, the 2020 Democratic primaries, the history of computers and the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum (lecture and tour).
