Three White River School District teachers were honored for achieving National Board Certification by the White River School Board at its regular meeting Dec. 9. Glacier Middle School teacher Teri Fleming, Foothills Elementary School counselor Deborah See-Colgan and Mountain Meadow Elementary School teacher Marilyn Firnkoess were this year’s recipients.

National Board Certification is a voluntary assessment program designed to identify, recognize and reward accomplished teachers who meet high and rigorous standards based on what teachers should know and be able to do. The National Board Certification process involves video of teachers in their classrooms, an extensive written paper and an exam.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, which oversees the National Board Certified Teachers program, has developed the only national set of professional standards that defines accomplished teaching. These standards are designed by the teacher, applicable in the classroom and focused on what makes a difference for students.

Each recipient also receives a $5,000 bonus each year.

Approximately 10 teachers in the White River School District have earned National Board Certification.
