Black Diamond will soon be home to a brand-new MultiCare family medical clinic.
The Puget Sound-based healthcare system announced June 8 that construction on the MultiCare Family Medicine — Black Diamond building, as it will be called, is to start this summer, with an expected completion date of December 2021.
The clinic is to be located in the Diamond Square complex (30711 3rd Avenue), close to the Lumber House Brewery off state Route 169.
According to Dr. Veronica Hooper, the physician executive of primary care at MultiCare, the building will staff six family medicine providers and have an on-site laboratory.
“We’re really looking more and more at serving more and more of our community, and one of the things that we looked at with Black Diamond was, how do we make something comprehensive and local?” Hooper said in a June 10 interview. “Local matters. The community has a different feel in Black Diamond than… in Covington, so how do we come to the community instead of having the communities come to us?
“Black Diamond was one of those locations where we felt there was a need, and we wanted to be part of the community,” Hooper continued, adding that MultiCare has been talking with the landlord about this prospect for about a year.
The new medical clinic will likely not be the only new development, said landowner Lee Wittenberg.
“Tenants of all sizes are attended to, and that includes offices down to individual rooms that folks can rent out,” Wittenberg said of his complex. “This will… give folks a lot of opportunity to get their footprint out, particularly on the retail spaces, where they really haven’t had an option. There really hasn’t been an ability to do small retail in the area.”
Wittenberg added that he’s had conversations with a few potential businesses, but so far, only MultiCare has made definite plans to come in.
But the fact that MultiCare showed interest in coming to Black Diamond is a “great thing” for the city, he continued. “They’re recognizing the growth that’s going on in that city. It’s a huge validation of what the city’s been doing in terms of its growth.”
