Theater performers are heralded for their ability to improvise, adapt and think on the fly.

Those traits are particularly important these days, as the ongoing pandemic has threatened to darken stages everywhere – but not at Enumclaw High School.

While not exactly taking to “the stage,” a determined band of actors, actresses and technical support staff have put the finishing touches on “Frankenstein: The Radio Play” and are ready to unleash the classic tale on the public.

Running the EHS Drama Club are co-directors Allison Abrahamse and Juliet Bannerot. Together, they have crafted a virtual performance that will be available to all on three consecutive nights, Oct. 29-31. The live production – made possible through Zoom – begins nightly at 7 p.m. and has a running time (with intermission) of nearly two hours.

The co-directors are boosted by a couple of faculty members who are lending their expertise: William Abrahamse is serving as technical director and EHS band director Ben Barker is providing original music.

The production involves 23 Enumclaw High students who have been working on “Frankenstein” since early September. Participating remotely, they have been rehearsing the script, comparing notes and taking direction three days a week, dedicating more than two hours each day.

“It’s being done in the style of a radio play,” Bannerot said, adding that actors will be visible to the audience from their at-home locations.

To watch the performance, the audience must first visit www.enumclawperformingarts.com. By reserving a “ticket,” guests will receive a link to a performance. While online attendance is free, there’s a small processing fee (about $3).

Each ticket allows viewing on just one device, though it can be watched by multiple people.

”Frankenstein: The Radio Play” was created by Philip Grecian, based on his own stage play and the novel by Mary Shelley. In keeping with the classic tale, the performance is described this way on www.enumclawperformingarts.com: “Upon graduating from the university, and with the help of his friend Henry Clerval, Victor Frankenstein set out to create life – using corpses stolen from graveyards. During a raging storm, he is successful but, too late, realizes he has created a misshapen, inarticulate horror…his Creature.”

The student cast includes Mercer Akeson, Kaya Albright, Jade Brewer, Mateo Cuadros, Emma Fehr, Harrison Gomes, Augy Hall, Patrick Hill-Halverson, Claire Hopkins, Jade Ince, Micah Robinson, Shaelynn Shook, Isaac Soltero-Arriaga, Lizzy Tolbert, Taylor Travis, Shea Varnadore and Ana Vazquez.

The technical crew includes Nolan Cooper, Hannah Collins, Morrgan Cooper, Jessica Duthie, Adele Razor and Estephania Tabarez.
