It was a good day for running Sept. 16 when the Enumclaw High cross country crew headed south to run against Timberline and Sumner.

Except for the wild animals, that is.

A cougar sighting forced a move from the campus of St. Martin’s University, where the meet was to be held, but that didn’t impact the outcome. In the end, Enumclaw’s girls defeated Sumner 21-40 and handled Timberline 16-47. The Hornet boys also had a clean sweep, besting Sumner 18-45 while whipping Timberline 22-38.

Enumclaw High’s girls were paced by Carissa Gwerder, who was first overall with a time of 16 minutes, 51 seconds on the 2.6-mile course. She was followed by Emily Eilertson, third place, 16:59; Julia Harris, fourth, 17:02; Chandler Weinman, sixth, 17:13; and Sierra Myers, eighth, 17:47.

The EHS boys were headed by Larry Carvert, the first runner across the line, who posted a time of 14:08. Others figuring in the Hornet scoring were Braden Timpe, second overall, 14:19; Abe Kellogg, fourth, 14:42; Kevin nelson, sixth 15:02; and Brandon Shook, seventh, 15:16.

After a Saturday jaunt to Oregon, where selected members of the Hornet crew competed, the team will be back in action today, Wednesday. On their home course at Nolte State Park, the Hornets will entertain Yelm, Peninsula and Bonney Lake.
