After a couple of uncharacteristic performances during the holidays, things have returned to normal now that White River’s boys are back from the break and playing South Puget Sound League 2A roundball again.
The Hornets went 3-for-3, trimming Franklin Pierce 53-52 Jan. 3 and then winning their second league affair of the week when they traveled to Fife Friday and clobbered the Trojans 66-38, behind a 26 point night from Billy Kiel.
Saturday, White River hosted an exhibition with Mornington, a touring Australian team, and Kiel duplicated the previous day’s effort by pouring in another 26 points.
After a rough second quarter in which the Hornets scored just seven points and trailed at intermission 32-25, White River rallied to win with ease by outscoring Mornington 31-17 in a wild fourth stanza to win 71-62.
Besides Kiel’s contribution, Brandon Dove and Jason Tyler chipped in with 10 and 12 points, respectively.
White River’s tandem of triumphs put it at 10-2 overall and 5-1 in league, as WRHS went into Tuesday night’s engagement with 5-1 Sumner. Friday, White River commences its second round of league play when it welcomes defending 2A state champion Clover Park at 7 p.m.
