With a year’s worth of high school sports condensed into just a few months of play, it seems that seasons will run together.
Actually, they will.
Here’s the timeline for the rest of the 2021, three-season sporting calendar, as it applies to the 10 schools competing in the South Puget Sound League 2A.
The current season – which includes football, volleyball, girls soccer, girls swim and dive, golf and cross country – opened play two weeks ago. Things will wrap things up for some sports later this month; for football, the regular season concludes April 2.
In a move to push the high-risk sports of basketball and wrestling later into the school year, Season 2 will consist of the traditional spring sports. The season begins March 29 and runs through May 8.
Participating in Season 2 will be boys and girls track and field, baseball, fastpitch, girls tennis and boys soccer.
Season 3 shapes up to be plenty busy, hosting boys tennis, gymnastics, bowling and boys swimming, as well as basketball, wrestling and lacrosse. Those last three sports field separate programs for both boys and girls.
Chris Gibson, athletic director at White River High and head coach of the girls’ basketball team, is taking a cautious approach. He points out that high-risk sports will only take place if the county has moved into Phase 3 of the “Healthy Washington” program. Currently, King and Pierce counties are in Phase 2.
