When candidates lined up in May to file for a wide range of elective offices, several available seats failed to attract a single candidate. Pierce County is hoping to rectify that situation by hosting a special filing period July 12-14.

There are five Plateau-area districts still in need of volunteers, citizens willing to lend their time and talents for the good of their neighbors.

Here are the open seats:

• Town of South Prairie – Council Positions 3 and 5

• Fire Protection District No. 25 (Crystal Mountain) – Commissioner Positions 1, 2 and 3

• Fire Protection District No. 26 (Greenwater) – Commissioner Position 1

• Burnett Water District – Commissioner Positions 1, 2 and 3

• Crystal Mountain Sewer District – Commissioner Positions 1, 2 and 3

Candidates who file during the special filing period will appear on the general election ballot. No primary election will be held.

Filing for office

Online candidate filing opens at 9 a.m. on Monday, July 12, and closes at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 14. To file, candidates should visit PierceCountyElections.org and choose the “File for Office” link.

In-person filing is available during business hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) on July 12-14 at the Pierce County Election Center, 2501 South 35th Street, Suite C in Tacoma.

Be prepared to:

Provide an email address.

Use a campaign mailing address, phone number and website address when you file for office. If you don’t, your voter registration address will be published online in the list of candidates who have filed.

Voters’ pamphlet information

After filing for office during this special filing period, candidates will have an opportunity to submit a statement and photo for the General Election Official Local Voters’ Pamphlet. If this information is not submitted online by 4:30 p.m. by July 23, 2021, a statement and photo will not appear in the voters’ pamphlet.
