With two more league wins, including a dramatic victory over Auburn, the Enumclaw High girls water polo team clinched second place in the East Division of the South Sound Girls Water Polo League and a berth at the state tournament May 18-21 at Rogers in Puyallup.

The girls started their winning ways with a 15-7 home pool win over Auburn April 26.

Auburn got on the scoreboard first, but the Hornets scored four straight goals for an early lead. The Trojans scored five in the second period for a 6-5 lead at halftime.

Five Hornets scored in the third period to go ahead and then held the Trojans scoreless for the final 12 minutes of the fourth quarter.

Six Hornets scored in the win led by Erin Stucker with five goals. Kelsey Sonneson and Annie Birklid each scored three goals; Allie Larrea scored two and Ali Ballard and Katie Larrea each scored one.

Thursday, Ballard scored five goals during the Hornets’ 10-8, come-from-behind victory over Auburn Riverside to earn their sixth consecutive trip to state.

The Ravens quickly had a 2-0 lead over the Hornets after two fast break goals in the opening three minutes. Ballard cut the lead to one, scoring with 13 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Ballard scored two more and Sonneson scored one to tie the game at four at the half.

The Ravens held EHS scoreless in the third quarter and scored three for a 7-4 advantage. Ballard stole the ball and scored 52 seconds into the fourth quarter. She scored again on a fast break less than a minute later to bring the Hornets within one and Stucker tied the game on a fast break 33 seconds later.

Stucker and Sonneson each added a goal in the next 49 seconds to give Enumclaw a 9-7 lead with 3:33 remaining. The Ravens narrowed the lead with a goal with 1:53 left, but Sonneson shut the door with a seven-meter goal for the win.
