Stryder Argo, the new head coach for the White River High School volleyball squad, is looking for consistency.

“When I was an assistant coach on this team last year, the one thing that I noticed time and time again was that one moment we would play like world beaters and the next moment we would come out flat. It was too much hit and miss.

If his crew develops some consistency, Argo said, they can compete in the South Puget Sound League 3A. Eight girls return from last year’s varsity squad, so the squad should mesh pretty well, Argo said.

The tandem of senior standouts highlighting this year’s Hornet six pack are Kelsi Tyler, a three-sport athlete at outside hitter, and Carley McCutchen, a middle blocker who snuffs out quite a few would-be kills and doesn’t let many balls slip past her.

A couple of bright sophomore prospects, who saw a bit of playing time on the courts last year as freshman, are middle blocker Dannie Stroud and Jailyn VanSickle, who will be WRHS’ starting setter.

Argo surmised that Enumclaw and Auburn Mountainview might head the SPSL 3A pack, despite both of those squads losing their starting senior setters, and that Sumner should be good, despite losing killer queen Jocelyn Levig. But the team to beat, Argo said, will probably be Lakes High’s Lancers, who are loaded with senior talent.

The Hornets’ league quest for triumphs begins at 7 p.m. Sept. 9 when they will travel to Auburn Mountainview.
