The excitement of an Enumclaw High homecoming celebration was dashed a bit Friday night when the Hornets fell 14-7 to the visiting crew from Steilacoom.

The loss dropped Enumclaw’s record to 3-1 in South Puget Sound League 2A play and 4-2 overall. The league wins have come against Washington, Franklin Pierce and Clover Park.

This week sees the Hornets playing on a Saturday for the third time this season. On Oct. 16, EHS will travel to Fife High where it will be Senior Night on the Trojans’ turf.

Fife will enter the contest with a league mark of 2-1 that includes victories over Clover Park and Franklin Pierce, along with a loss to White River.

For Enumclaw, last week’s seven-point loss came against a Steilacoom High team that has built an enviable recent record. During last season’s truncated campaign the Sentinels captured the SPSL 2A championship; and it was two seasons ago that Steilacoom battled its way to the state Class 2A championship game and placed second. Finally, this year’s Sentinels have built a 4-0 record while outscoring opponents 87-27.

The homecoming loss to Steilacoom saw the scoreboard remain empty until late in the first half when the Sentinels’ Jaycion Cain had a short touchdown run. With the extra point kick, the host Hornets headed into halftime on the short end of a 7-0 score.

That margin stood until the early stages of the fourth quarter when Enumclaw’s Emmit Otero scored from three yards out. When Noah Seabrands tacked on the extra-point kick, the league rivals headed into the home stretch with the game deadlocked.

It took the Sentinels just a couple of minutes to add a rushing touchdown of their own. That was the deciding score as the Hornets were unable to come up with any late-game heroics.

WHITE RIVER

The White River crew has last week’s game pushed to Monday of this week.

As a result – due to press deadlines – details about the Hornets’ Oct. 11 road game against the Washington Patriots could not be included in this week’s edition of the Courier-Herald.
