It’s nice to see an election in Buckley receive a little ink, even when it says little of the issues. The hanging of the sign, however controversial, is quite a physical feat.

It reminds me of a time when I served on the Transportation & Utility committee, working on a project to replace the diversion dam on the White River and put in a fish ladder.

I had gotten the attention of the Corps of Engineers by attending a kickoff event for the project in Sumner, brought all the information back to the council for perusal and action, which was passed on to the Mayor’s office. The then-city administrator chose not to pursue any further action for what could have been a major tourist attraction.

This inaction was supported by then-council member Burkett, now running for Mayor, who said that a fish ladder would not be doable. It makes one wonder by the hanging of the sign what his reasoning was for the fish ladder statement.

As he has chosen to pepper his public statements with meaningless phrases like “working man’s perspective” and “common sense” it leaves one wondering, as most fit that description. In most cases he has chosen to side with an administration that was prone to arbitrary decisions; will more arbitrary decisions be the expectation if he is to be elected?

To date, he has not defined himself as a candidate other than he is a native Buckleyite. The citizens of Buckley deserve more than that.
