After advancing to the Elite Eight in the Class 2A football playoffs the Enumclaw Hornets ran into a formidable roadblock.

Having defeated the Hockinson Hawks in the Round of 16, EHS was matched against the top-ranked Thunderbirds from Tumwater High. Playing Friday night on the T-birds’ home field, Enumclaw was outmatched 56-21.

Tumwater showed why it climbed to the top of the 2A rankings by racing to a 28-0 lead before the contest was eight minutes old.

Enumclaw’s final game of the season included a touchdown Dylan Watterson off a screen pass from Malcolm Harper and short TD runs by Dawson Harding and Harper.

Enumclaw finished the season with a overall record of 9-3.

VOLLEYBALL: WHITE RIVER FIFTH, ENUMCLAW SEVENTH

Two Plateau teams traveled to the Class 2A state volleyball tournament and two trophies returned.

Both White River and Enumclaw high schools had advanced to the 16-team state tourney, staged Nov. 19-20 at the Yakima SunDome.

After the dust settled and 26 matches were played, the White River girls were hoisting the fifth-place trophy and the Enumclaw crew had claimed eighth place. White River won three of four matches in Yakima while Enumclaw had two wins and a pair of losses.

White River opened the tourney with a long, hard-fought, 3-2 victory over Ellensburg (25-19, 26-24, 21-25 24-26, 23-21) to advance into the winners’ bracket. In Friday’s quarterfinals, White River was matched against SPSL 2A foe Steilacoom and dropped a 3-0 decision.

The Buckley crew stayed alive Saturday morning with another long battle, eventually defeating Lynden High 3-2 (26-24, 25-15, 21-25, 20-25, 15-10). That victory put White River into a finale for fifth and sixth place, paired against Anacortes. The Hornets prevailed in three, winning 25-23, 31-29, 25-20.

In Friday’s first round, Enumclaw started with a tough 3-2 loss to Lynden High (25-19, 20-25, 21-25, 25-13, 17-15), then stayed alive by blanking Sequim 3-0.

EHS began Saturday play with a 3-0 victory over the Highlanders from Spokane’s Shadle Park High, winning 25-16, 25-11, 25-22. In Saturday’s battle for seventh and eighth place, Enumclaw dropped a 3-1 decision to Mark Morris High (25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 25-17).

The South Puget Sound League 2A was well represented in Yakima, with three teams placing in the top eight. Aside from White River and Enumclaw, Steilacoom was a force; the Sentinels won their first two, lost in the semifinals and bounced back with a victory over Burlington-Edison to take third-place honors. A fourth SPSL 2A team, the Washington Patriots, won a match before being eliminated.
