Sam Horn led the Enumclaw High School music contingent with a superior rating and a third-place finish at the State Solo and Ensemble Contest at Central Washington University in Ellensburg.

The event was hosted by the Washington Music Educator’s Association and the Washington Interscholastic Activity Association and brought together the top high school music students in the state.

At the state competition, students must receive a superior rating in order to be in contention for the top three spots.

EHS music director Lynda Alley said the competition was fierce.

“The best against the best competing for that top spot,” Alley said. “It is nothing short of a display of virtuosic ability.”

In addition to Horn’s superior rating, Kaelynn Dirks and Alyssa Hudon received a superior rating for their violin duet. Dirks also earned a solo violin superior rating.

The brass quintet of David Schiff, trumpet, Casey Smith, trumpet, Jillian Welsh, French horn, Andres Fernandez, trombone, and Nino Averill, tuba, earned a superior rating.

Schiff received a superior rating in solo trumpet as well.

Excellent ratings went to Zachary Bainter in solo bass clarinet and the EHS vocal quartet of Molly Semon, soprano, KeelyAnn Kelly, alto, Taylor Capellaro, tenor, and Kameron Jacobs, bass.
