The Enumclaw High Hornets will be gunning for a sixth consecutive victory Thursday night when they take on the Franklin Pierce Cardinals.
If the Hornets are to remain unbeaten, they will have to pull off a road win. Thursday’s contest kicks off at 7 p.m. against a Franklin Pierce squad that sits at 1-2 in South Puget Sound League 2A play (3-2 overall).
Enumclaw improved to 3-0 in league play and 5-0 overall last week with a convincing 56-13 victory over the Steilacoom Sentinels. The game was a blowout from the beginning, as EHS found the end zone on just the fourth play of the game. The first of the team’s eight touchdowns came on an 18-yard pass play from quarterback Gunnar Trachte to Bo Dods.
Before the first half ended, Trachte tossed a second TD pass, this time to Karson Holt. Emmit Otero added a pair of touchdown runs and Mason Taylor-Wells jumped on a loose ball in the end zone following a blocked punt for the Hornets’ fifth TD of the half.
Second-half touchdowns came on another Trachte-to-Holt completion, Otero’s third rushing TD of the night and a 26-yard run by Louis Chevalier. Noah Seabrands was perfect on all eight extra-point attempts to round out the scoring.
WHITE RIVER
Things didn’t go nearly as well across the county line, where White River High hosted the Washington Patriots and was swamped 63-14.
After opening the season with a win, the Hornets have now lost four in a row, the last three coming against SPSL 2A opponents.
This week brings a tough test with White River traveling to Fife for a Friday night tussle with the Trojans. Fife is 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in league play.
The Hornets’ two touchdowns against Washington were passing plays. Quarterback Aaden Rathbun, who is proving he can move the squad through the air, found Cameron Schmidtke for a 6-yard TD in the third quarter and connected with Denver Mollett for a 34-yard score in the final period. Brayden Bockness was good on both extra-point tries.
Rathbun finished the game 21-for-34, with 11 of those completions (good for 128 yards) going to tight end Jacob Rennaker. That performance leaves Rennaker tied for No. 2 on the school’s all-time list for receptions in a single game.
Aside from giving up 63 points, the news was even worse for White River. Injuries are piling up, leaving the squad with junior varsity players taking the field and a couple of varsity starters playing out of position.
